I believe in holistic nutrition; I know that grocery food is absolutely terrible. I work in a pet health food store where our purpose is to get people’s animals off food like "Hill’s perscription, IIams, Purina etc" and I just want to have a more compelling argument.
People have argued that a high protein diet can destroy the kidneys and I need a educated come back.
Please tell me all you can.
There is a difference between high protein found in meat sources and concentrated protein that can be found in protein shakes.
The thing with good dog foods is not that it has "high" protein, but in the fact that they are minimal grains and protein based. There’s a different.
Dogs are carnivores and do not need vegetables the way we do, and they are not physically capable of digesting grains. Grains will make them sick, give them gas, bad breath, weight problems, etc.

just tell them that a high protien diet will give the dog more energy and more "energy" to fight off illness . just sound confident, youre the one working at a dog health food store not them . they should believe you .

I don’t think you are being fair. One diet doesn’t fit all. You have to weigh both the pros AND the cons before advising people on what to buy.
A dog’s diet depends on it’s needs. If it is a large breed puppy, they’ll need lesser amounts of protein to grow properly. Sedentary dogs also don’t need as much protein as say, a working dog. High protein is good for very active dogs, whelping bitches, and dogs recovering from surgery or an injury.
I’ve heard conflicting reports on whether or not high protein diets may destroy kidneys. I believe it’s a myth, but I can’t be sure. I think the thing is that high protein can AGGRAVATE a dog who has been diagnosed with a kidney problem. I don’t believe it can CAUSE a problem. So if someone has a dog with a kidney issue, high protein is not recommended.

Switched from Pedigree to Wellness to Wellness Core for my dogs’ health. I wasn’t disappointed.
There is no scientific study that shows a high protein diet causes kidney problems in dogs. The study often quoted was in rodents and used cheap protein from corn. If you do a google search you can probably find the exacts on it. Everything people usually say about high protein diets is speculation and "I heard about this one dog….."
Of course not all dogs will tolerate high protein diets, just like any diet. I feed EVO and Orijen because grains are not a normal part of a canines diet and I am unable to feed raw at this time.
