I’m 5’10" and way 190 lbs. I have started working out and a local gym and have signed up with a personal trainer, starting in a week. I have done Weight Watchers in the past, and think it is an awesome program, I am probably going to go back to doing that as well. I just want to hear from other people what they think really works. No quick fix fad diets please. I know I didn’t gain weight overnight and am not looking to lose overnight. I just want to do something that is healthy and long lasting (provided I stick with it). I really haven’t set a goal weight for myself, I just want a smaller butt, thighs, and tone the tummy.

I am trying to losse weight and i can’t seem to find a good diet and work out program. walk me dog daily and i have cut out all junk food. So any hints.

The best way to lose weight and to keep it off you is a complete lifestyle change and you will need to be committed to it.

Fad diets and diet pills will waste your time and money and will lead you back to where you started.
Changing your habits to more healthier ones is the best way to lose weight and keep it off.

The body loses about 2 pounds a week optimally and thats 2 pounds that stay off. When you drop at a faster rate your body could potentially rebound and either plateau your weight loss or put extra weight on. If you are committed then you should reach your goal.

This bit of advice is something I tell anyone who asks whether you are my client or not.
There are 5 most important things that must go together in any workout program. These are part of changing your complete lifestyle to one that is healthier. They also help you to naturally optimize your metabolism. The faster your metabolism the better your body uses your food for energy, instead of storing it as fat.

I put them in the order of importance.

1. Eat more. Yes eat more. More meals that is. It is best to eat a small meal every 3-4 hours. The meal should be just large enough to where you are not hungry, as opposed to eating you are full. There is a difference. Eating 1 or 2 meals a day slows your metabolism down. You should have at least 4-6 meals a day.

2. Drink more water. Most of us dont have enough water. This means our bodies are dehydrated. Two things a dehydrated body has trouble doing, one is releasing water. In order to lose fat you must be able to release water, because fat cells in your body are composed of mostly water. A dehydrated body cannot build very well. Muscle tone indicates a constant building state in your body. If your body isnt building that means it is losing muscle and its never good to lose muscle that slows your metabolism and makes you look flabby.

3. Maintain a balanced workout regimen of cardio and resistance (weights). Cardio is good for fat burning and its easy to do and to progress yourself. Resistance is a little harder because its not as easy to know what to do. If weights arent your thing then try Yoga or Pilates. Both are very effective resitance and core training and can help you maintain lean muscle and increase your overall metabolism.

4. Smart supplementation of your diet is your best solution to making sure you get the nutrients your food doesnt give you. Plus cleanses, as well as detox formulas are awesome for eliminating toxins we take into our bodies without knowing.

5. Sleep is a very important part of any healthy lifestyle regimen. When we sleep our bodies and minds refresh themselves and allow us to function at an optimal level. Sleeping allows muscles to rebuild themselves and when they do that, it speeds your metabolism.

You may ask why I gave you this long list instead of just telling you what exercises to do. The reason is if you think that exercising is all you need then you are mislead. If exercising is all we needed to look and feel great then everybody who works out at the gym would have great bodies and be healthy. Its not true. If it was then what I do would be not necessary and there would be a gym on every street corner.

My background: 25 year old male, 6’2", 180 lbs, basically fit and trim. I’ve been doing Matt Furey’s combat conditioning, eating less than 2000 cals/day and doing about 30 pull ups daily. I look and feel fit, but I have kind of a wiry look.

My objectives:
1. exercise no more than 30-60 mins a day.
2. eat well, but on a budget(!) approx. $10/day
3. gain strength, size to arms / torso
4. put on a little muscle weight/size without having to consume too many calories
5. avoid using free weights / machines, if possible, as I don’t have them

I’m not a crazy anorexic or anything, but I believe that consuming as few calories as possible will lead to a longer life.

So I really want a lifestyle that is healthy and sustainable. IE: I don’t want consider the consumption of 5000 calories worth of expensive placebo supplements sustainable.

What is the best workout and diet program for me? Thanks a million!

The following healthy living recommendations will help you if you’re trying to lose weight, tone up your muscles, have aspirations of building lean muscle mass, are attempting to get a wash board stomach, or just want to feel better:

*1) Burn more calories then you’re consuming everyday and measure your results using the following formula: Calories Consumed minus Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) minus Physical Activity minus the Thermic Effect of Food (TEF). A website that explains this formula in more detail and will help you determine how many calories you need to reach or maintain a certain weight is at http://www.primusweb.com/fitnesspartner/library/weight/calsburned.htm

Get a diet and fitness calculator that you can put on your computer or cell phone. This will allow you to easily calculate the above formula, set goals, log your daily calorie consumption, and register your physical activities.

Set realistic goals for your ideal body weight. Here are two websites that will calculate a suggested body weight:
Adults: http://www.halls.md/ideal-weight/body.htm
Teens/Children: http://www.kidshealth.org/kid/exercise/weight/bmi.html

It is difficult and unhealthy to lose more than one or two pounds per week. There are 3,500 calories in a pound. If you eat 500 fewer calories per day for a week you will lose one pound. If you burn through exercise 500 more calories per day for a week you will lose one pound.

*2) Eat natural and organic foods found on earth versus something created by a corporation to make money. Eat meals in small portions throughout the day and take a good multi-vitamin supplement.

Avoid “High Glycemic Load Carbs” (sugar, pastries, desserts, refined starches such as breads, pasta, refined grains like white rice; high starch vegetables such as potatoes) and drink lots of water. Read this article for more information on high GL Carbs:

I don’t like fish, and I don’t like a lot of things I have seen in the big fad diets. (South Beach , Atkins menus), anyone know of a program with cheap and normal (everyday) food?

One that I can buy things from my supermarket, not prepackaged stuff.
I had a baby recently, and can’t lose the last of the weight. I haven’t been able to exercise for a long time (after having baby) because I had some trouble with my leg, due to having the baby. I’m looking to lose that last stubborn bit of weight!

I am exercising now, and I don’t do sweets or soda.

As the economy continues its downward spiral, is it hitting you where it really hurts…your waistline? I bet many of you are thinking about your wallet and only your wallet, which makes a lot of sense. After all, there’s a lot of uncertainty out there. But now is not the time to forget about yourself and the success of your weight loss program.

USA Today recently had an article in April that discussed the detrimental effects these stressful economic times can have on your diet and overall health. In it, many of the hardworking people interviewed said the added pressure of the dwindling economy wrecked havoc on their diets, and left many grabbing for the nearest candy bar to comfort their wallet woes. Now, several months later, things have only gotten worse and I’m afraid that those of you who may have stuck to your plans of wanting to lose fat and Lose Inches may have succumbed to the sugary temptations that are out there.

That’s OK. If you have, there’s no need to panic. But now is the time to get back to it! If you had a previous goal to lose 30 pounds, but it seems too far out of reach, why not adjust your diet plan to lose 25 pounds, or even 20. If you still want to aim high, by all means do, but also be aware of the fact that many of those fad diets out there are almost begging you to fail so that you’ll keep coming back and paying for more. And odds are you can no longer afford a diet plan that doesn’t make a return on its investment.

The cost of obesity in the United States was more than 117 billion in 2000, according to the Centers for Disease Control. That number is likely much higher now, but don’t let the stresses of the economy take advantage over things money can never touch—your own personal health and wellbeing. If you find that you’re still struggling to make Weight Loss ends meet, a Supervised Weight Loss plan might be a more effective route to take.

As always, keep your heads up. Although the economy may be down, find strength in yourself by empowering your personal weight loss goals. You can’t control the American markets, but you can have complete control over your weight loss!

Bodybuilding can be defined as the pursuit of lean muscle mass. The importance of a proper diet to accomplish this goal cannot be understated. In fact, many experts argue that diet can account for up to 90% of a person’s success at building their body. Fortunately, there is an easy-to-follow meal plan that works like magic to burn fat and gain muscle.

In this day and age of fad diets and trendy diets and so on, it is important to note that bodybuilding involves a lifestyle. Regular, intense and goal-oriented training sessions combined with an intelligent approach to eating will promote the development of a muscular physique that most trainees desire. Discipline, patience, persistence and consistency are required. All of these attributes are favorable and can lead one to success in not only physique goals, but also in personal and professional pursuits.

When an individual adopts bodybuilding as a lifestyle, the physique improvements can be maintained over the long term. A steady, consistent and daily approach will prevent the agony of short-term weight loss followed by a quick regain of weight and the accompanying depression and feeling of hopelessness. Training and eating like a bodybuilder works, becomes habit-forming and eventually gives one a real sense of satisfaction and accomplishment.

We like to adhere to the KISS (keep it simple, smart guy) principle when it comes to meal plans. So let’s not going to get too technical. We’re just going to lay it out for you. First of all, you should eat smaller meals, 5-6 times per day, 2 ½ -3 hours apart. This will keep your metabolism going and provide your muscles (stimulated by short, intense workouts) fed with nutrients required for growth. These meals will consist of protein, carbohydrates and fats.

Proper protein intake will vary according to age, gender, goals and so on. Generally speaking, each meal should contain between 25-50 grams of protein. A rule of thumb is that a healthy male trying to promote lean muscle mass should ingest 1.5 grams of protein per pound of body weight. Therefore, if your body weight is 200 pounds, a daily intake of 300 grams of protein (6 meals with 50 grams of protein each) would be required. The key is that if you are training hard, you need protein.

Sources for protein include lean meats, fish, egg whites, low fat cottage cheese and whey protein. Avoid fatty meats and try to grill your meats and do not fry them in fat. Remember to include a protein selection at each meal.

When discussing carbohydrates, it is vital to distinguish between the different types of carbs. For this discussion we will identify 3 different types of carbs: complex carbs include potatoes, yams, bread, cereals, grains, pasta and rice; simple carbs include most fruit and veggie carbs which include most vegetables and leafy greens.

Fats are also a necessity but should come from the following sources: extra virgin olive oil, flax seed oil, nuts (almonds are best) and fish oil. The diet is very simple. For every meal, choose a portion from the protein group, the complex carb group and the veggie carb group. A good rule of thumb is that a serving size for your protein and carbs should be about the size of your fist. Have a serving of fats at 2-3 meals per day and only have simple carbs first thing in the morning at breakfast and immediately following your workout. Actually, it’s critical to have a post workout shake with whey protein and a simple carb like a banana. Bring it to the gym with you and have it while the sweat is still on your body.

Now to fine tune this diet you can do this: if you are trying to increase muscle mass and not worried too much about losing fat, eat as above. However, if you wish to accelerate fat burning, do not eat complex carbs at your last 2-3 meals of the day. Lean protein (chicken breast or fish) and salads or chunky veggies (broccoli and asparagus are excellent choices) will do the trick.

Let’s take this one step further. Here is a magic formula for extreme lean muscle mass and fat burning. For three days in a row, come hell or high water, only eat complex carbs first thing in the morning (a serving of oatmeal will do it) and immediately after your workout. On the fourth day, eat a ton of carbs. Actually cheat on this day. Eat whatever you want, but ensure that you eat sufficient protein and lots of complex carbs. This is the time to eat pizza, pasta, cake and so on.

This three day off, one day on carbs has produced fantastic results in many bodybuilders. We like it because any cravings we can put off until our “carb” day (which isn’t really that far off in the future) and then indulge at that time. The secret is to remain strict on the low carb days. This takes planning, preparation and discipline. You can do it. Once you start to see the results you get from this carbohydrate manipulation, you will find it much easier to stick to it.

This meal plan should produce such dramatic results so quickly that your friends will be asking you what you are “on”. The real secret is daily discipline. Take it one day at a time. Eat right according to the principles outlined above, manipulate your cab intake and train with intensity focusing on basic, heavy movements. This is the bodybuilding lifestyle. Engage in it and change your life, long-term and for the better.

How do I get flat abs? What a common question with a
simple answer. No matter how many crunches you do, unless you
lose the layer of fat covering your abs, you will not show those
sculpted abs.
Period. The basic concept to lose that
unwanted abdominal fat is by combining cardio and abs exercise,
and eating healthy. Talking from my own experience, I
will share some simple steps to get flat abs with you, as I am
on my way to revealing my own flat abs by saying solemnly
bye-bye to belly fat and welcome to those flat abs.

How many times have you heard that by doing 100s crunches a day
you will get those sculpted abs? Well, this is not so. If you
have a high body fat percentage, the abs just won’t show no
matter how much you work or how many repetitions you do,

simple as that. It is logic, if we are carrying extra fat, toned
muscles cannot show because they are being covered, precisely,
by that unwanted extra fat. The only way to get rid of fat is
not by targeting exercises, but by burning excessive fat by
doing cardio exercises and adjusting our meals. In other
words, showing abs does not happen only in the floor exercise,
but also in the kitchen.

Abs exercises, just like any other muscle exercises, should
be done at least every other day,
not daily. Muscles need
time to recover. In my case, I am doing abs exercises every 2
days, so I give my abs muscles 48 hours to recover. I make sure
to consume enough protein too to help for muscle recovery and
burn more fat. In a nutshell, eating better and exercising will
maximize your efforts to lose weight and flatten your abs fast.

EATING HABITS – Helpful food/herbs for flat abs

Before starting with our abs exercise plan, it is important to
adjust our eating habits too. Your diet, or as I prefer to call
it “eating regime,” should consist of higher protein intake,
moderate fat and moderate complex carbohydrate. Consuming high
complex carbohydrate and not using all that energy will lead to
stored fat; that is why a higher protein diet is advisable, not
that you have to eliminate carbs. Carbs are necessary to have
energy and properly body functioning. However, do not go to
extremes, just be moderate, not like crazy pre-set diets.
Eliminate all excess simple sugars and excess saturated fats.

You can use extra virgin olive oil as it is monounsaturated fat.
Reality is that permanent weight loss requires a permanent
change in eating habits; drastic diets are not the way to keep
the weight off.

Drinking water is your other big step to get flat abs.
Water flushes both waste and toxins from your body and maintains
a sense of satiety while also flushing fat from your system
before it can be stored. Water not only dilutes the digestive
fluids, but also accelerates the passage of food. Drink at least
8 glasses of water. How about burning extra calories with water?
How? Drink cold water, and you can burn extra calories as your
body warms it up.

About eating habits, many times, we tend to retain water or gas,
which seems that we are accumulating “fat” when in reality it is
“gas” for eating too fast or having foods hard to digest. It
is crucial to eat slowly, enjoy each bite, and do not swallow
without appreciating all flavors.
The best suggestion to aid
digestion is to have daily yogurt (good at fighting the bad
bacteria and improving digestion), or add some type of “anise”
(either raw or as a tea infusion), the other option is by adding
digestive enzyme aids.

A great mistake is skipping breakfast. As many
nutritionists highlight, this is the main meal because is like
fuel to the body. After sleeping, we need to recover water and
add protein to our bodies as well as fiber. Ideally, oatmeal is
great for breakfast with enough carbs, fiber, and low in sugars.
Besides, it helps reduce cholesterol.

For dinner, you can have some chicken with salad because you
need to have some type of protein to help you burn fat, build
muscle and do not only limit only to salads, which is mostly
“low glycemic carbs” … or better said, water. Also, remember
of not adding heavy extra calorie dressing. You can use balsamic
vinegar or lemon. If not having chicken, you can have a protein
shake, yogurt, tofu, eggs, or any high protein meal.

These are suggested food/herbs to improve abs and to fight
bloated feeling.

Ginger Anise Celery Fennel Onion Garlic Green tea YOGURT (non
fat or low fat) Leek Raw sesame seeds Watermelon Strawberries

You can include them in your daily regime by either eating them
raw, cooked, or drinking tea, accordingly. I cannot emphasize
enough the importance of drinking Green tea. This is my main
magical drink because it speeds up my metabolism and sets it to
a fat burning mode. I prepare a cold pitcher of green tea for
the day. Sometimes, I drink it hot too. Generally, for the cold
pitcher, I combine it with ginger and anise, and that is my main
arm to combat fat and bloated feeling.

I suggest you eat every 3 hours to keep your body in “fat
burning mode.” Naturally, I am talking about small portions, not
super size portions. For instance, I eat every 3 hours, keeping
2 main meals and the other 4 snacks, including protein in all 6,
especially for breakfast and dinner.

Do not go into drastic diets because if you drop your calories
too drastically, your body may opt to use muscle tissue for
energy instead of fat. Moderation is the key. Many people who go
on fad diets look so soft because they lose almost as much
muscle mass as fat. Many studies have shown that the majority
of people, who use drastic diets, will gain the weight back, if
not even more than they lost.
To make it personal, I was one
of those statistics. I fell many times into the yo-yo cycle
until I said no more! I rather lose weight and keep the weigh
off, than just a quick fake Weight Loss.
How about you?

Nutritional supplements are good to aid your program, but as the
word says, they are just supplements. Your supplements
cannot do the work for you if you are not eating and exercising
properly. For instance, when I am running out of time, and
cannot have my protein meal, I drink a protein shake.

EXERCISE TIPS FOR BELLY FLATTENING – DEFINING YOUR ABS

You can expect to feel or see results in as little as 2 weeks
by combining cardio and abs exercises and your eating
regime.
A combination of carbs and protein are needed for a
pre-workout meal. Exercise tips for a faster belly-flattening
plan include different sets of exercises, at least 3 times per
week 30-45 minutes cardio, and 2-3 times per week abs exercises.
(I use weight lifting training too.) here is no such thing as
magical fat spot reducing.
It is a matter of lowering total
fat levels; as you lose fat, it will come off automatically all
over your body-not just in specific spot areas.

Do 2-3 sets for each exercise. Each set consists of 15 to 20
repetitions of each exercise. For every exercise, move slowly to
make the muscle work: 2 or 3 seconds up, hold 1 second, and 2 or
3 seconds down. The point here is to fatigue the muscle, not on
how fast you can do an exercise. You can rest about 90 seconds
between sets.

Note: If you cannot do 2 sets, it is ok. Start with one;
the important thing is to start, take action to see results. Do
not get discouraged; just try your best.

Crunches

1. Lie flat on your back with your feet flat on the ground (or
resting on a bench with your knees bent at a 90 degree angle,
three to four inches apart)

2. Place your hands lightly on either side of your head keeping
your elbows in. Tip: Don’t lock your fingers behind your head.

3. The key is to push the small part of your back down in the
floor to isolate your abs muscles.

4. Roll your shoulders off the floor; continue to push down –as
hard as you can– with your lower back to fatigue the muscle.

5. Shoulders should come up off the floor –only– about four
inches, while your lower back remains on the floor.

6. Concentrate on crunching together rather than moving your
body upwards to maximize muscle tension. Contract your muscles
as tight as you can to cause them to fatigue, the movement
should be like playing the accordion. This is more important
than doing quick repetitions.

Note: Another option is exercise ball crunch

Reverse crunches

1. Lie face up on the floor, place hands on the floor or just
behind the head. 2. Bring the knees in towards the chest bent to
about 90 degrees, with feet together or crossed. 3. Contract the
abs to curl the hips off the floor, reaching the legs up towards
the ceiling. 4. Use slow movements, emphasis is to use your abs
to lift your hips not swinging the legs.

Bicycle

1. Lie face up on the floor, lace your fingers behind your head.
2. Bring the knees in towards the chest and lift the shoulder
blades off the ground without pulling on the neck. 3. Pedaling
movement: Straight the left leg out while simultaneously turning
the upper body to the right, bringing the left elbow towards the
right knee. 4. Now, switch sides, bringing the right elbow
towards the left knee to complete the pedaling movement. 5. Do
slow pedaling to feel muscle contraction … remember, is not
about speed but about fatiguing the abs muscle.

Captain’s chair / Roman Chair (mostly found in gyms)

1. Stand on chair, grip handholds to stabilize your upper body,
keep it firm. 2. Make sure you are pressing your back against
the pad, now contract the abs to raise the legs and lift knees
towards your chest. 3. Remember to be firm and don’t arch the
back, repeat slowly…remember, emphasis is on the abs muscles.

Vertical Leg Crunch

1. Lie face up on the floor, extend the legs straight up with
knees crossed. (or straight) 2. Contract the abs to lift the
shoulder blades off the floor, as though reaching your chest
towards your feet. 3. Keep the legs in a fixed position and
lower to original position, but keep the legs extended.

Long Arm Crunch (my favorite)

1. Lie face up on the floor, extend the arms straight out behind
the head with hands clasped, keeping the arms next to the ears.
2. Contract the abs and lift the shoulder blades off the floor,
the pressure should be from the abs, not the neck. 3. Hold, feel
the contraction, and lower to original position.

Super Abs Stretch

1. Lie face up on the floor, extend the arms straight out behind
the head. 2. Bring down the arms, slowly, feel the abs muscle
stretching. Movement is arms straight behind the head to next to
the legs.

3. Up and down feeling the stretch, hold it and start all over.

Summarizing, targeting exercises will not work unless you are
targeting your entire body by doing cardio exercises and
eliminating fat.
Targeting upper, lower, inner, and outer
abs muscles will not burn fat; they define the muscles. Burning
fat is done by cardio exercises and by consuming healthy foods.
Remember, I told you already, flat abs are not only done in the

The next time you’re dining out, you might not be able to take refuge in the fact that you weren’t aware just how many calories were in that entrée.

In December 2008, the Mayor of Philadelphia signed a law requiring most chain restaurants to begin posting the caloric content of the meals they serve beginning in January 2010. The law follows similar legislation in New York City, as well as California, and applies to restaurant chains—including coffee shops, ice cream parlors and convenience stores—with a total of 15 or more stores, whether in the city or elsewhere, according to a Dec. 18 news article by the Associated Press.

The law is evident of not only a nationwide obesity problem, but an ever growing worldwide statistic, in which the waistlines of more and more people are falling victims to the rampant availability of high-calorie, fatty, and sugary foods—all while ignoring the potentially debilitating health problems inside their own bodies.

In England, for example, a recent study there concluded that obesity levels have almost doubled over the last 14 years. That means one in four (or 24 percent) of men and women were considered obese in 2007 compared with the 16 percent of women and 13 percent of men in 1993.

The report also showed that men and women greatly underestimated how much exercise they needed to do to keep healthy, while few knew the limit on how much alcohol they should be drinking each day.

This lack of self-awareness is something that obviously stretches to our borders as well, and is apparent in the number of fad diets that have come out in recent years. You know which ones I’m talking about—everything from Seattle Sutton’s to the South Beach Diet. You might as well call them the diets that stretch from the far Northwest to the tip of the southeast! But lets face it, if you want to lose weight, lose fat, and Lose Inches you have to stick with something that works, and frankly, these fad diets might be wrong for you.

Whether or not these new calorie-awareness menus work remains to be seen, but I’m willing to bet that if people want to address their weight issues, it has to start with them. And sometimes starting your own diet program is the hardest part.

Confusion Galore

The phrase “fad diet” is thrown around so much these days that there seems to be quite a bit of confusion as to really what is a fad diet, or at least what the term actually means. Let break it down to understand it.

Everything Diets

Most people think “diet” means to lose weight. It actually means just what you are eating to sustain yourself. My pet parrot is on a diet… corn, sunflower, safflower, and other assorted seeds, and therefore my parrot is on a diet of parrot mix. He is not losing any weight or at least I hope not. A horse’s diet is hay! You are on a diet, whatever you eat on a daily basis. Now you cold be on a “weight loss diet” or you could be on a “muscle building diet” or any other number of diet possibilities. Everyone is on a diet!

Memory Lane

Remember the pet rock, hoola hoops, beanie babies, platform shoes? All fads that have come and gone. And that is exactly what a fad is, something that is popular for a while and then disappears. Fads are usually fun and that is why people like them.

Back to The Question

Now back to the meat of the subject. What is a fad diet? Since everyone and their brother is looking for an easy way to lose weight any weight loss diet that is popular for a short time and then falls from favor would be considered a fad diet. This could be due to the diet actually not working or more often than not most people are like those channel hopping TV remote abusers, jumping from diet to diet looking for a fast and easy way to lose weight with the smallest effort. Looking for that magic formula that doesn’t exist.

Blasting Stereotypes

Some times the term fad diet is used negatively as if all popular weight loss diets are just scams and therefore “fad diets” This is just not true. Yes, I can think of some that are jokes but that is not true with all Weight Loss diets. Many out there are quality plans and only fail if the user does not correctly implement them.

Benefits For You

It really boils down to this. You can lose weight without any purchased diet plan or program. To do so you will have to do all the research to learn about the ins and outs proper weight loss techniques and then implement your own plan and stick to it. This can be time consuming and most people have time constraints or would rather spend their free time doing something else. A quality Diet Program takes all the work out of doing the research and coming up with a plan of action. A good program will keep you organized, motivated and on track.

Conclusion:

So the next time some one tells you “I am on a diet” say “yeah, me too, food!’” and remember not all fad diets are created equal. Bet you thought all fad diets were scams. Guess what, I have examined dozens and All fad diets are NOT created equal.
